Before Covid, the club was running two competitive teams in the local leagues. When the pandemic allows, we are looking forward to getting competitive snooker back up and running.
Throughout the year, the club runs a number of in-house snooker competitions - singles, doubles, handicaps and more. We also offer a darts competition, cribbage, chess and billiards competitions.
Members can store their cues at the club in our cue cases. Saves having to remember to keep your cue in the car every time you want to head down for a few frames.
Pre the Second World War the club was honoured by a visit from Melbourne INMAN who was the World Billiards Champion in 1908, 1909, 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1919.
He was born on 15th July 1878 in Twickenham, Middlesex. In 1927 he reached the 2nd round of the World Snooker Championship at the age of 59 years.
He died in August 1951 at the age of 73 years. The exact date of his visit to The Central Club is not known but a note on the back of the photograph states ‘pre-war’ which is probably verified by the number of young military men surrounding him.
In 2006 The Central Club celebrated its Centenary with a series of special events during the anniversary month of October.
The final event of the month long anniversary celebrations was an ‘Evening with Dennis Taylor’ the 1985 World Snooker Champion and Television Snooker Broadcaster, on Tuesday 31st October 2006.
The evening was planned by the Club’s Centenary Committee Chairman, Brian Greenan who, as a Toastmaster had worked with Dennis Taylor at various events in London and who agreed to visit the club for that special centenary celebration.
The Club’s Committee declared the evening as a ‘Special Occasion’ and entry to the club would be by ticket only to members attending the event. Table four was designated as the playing table and the snooker hall was laid out with reserved ‘table side’ seating (as per the attached plan) at a cost of £10 per seat, with a further 20 seats with a limited view at £5 per seat. There were free standing areas, at no cost, behind tables three and five and free standing in the main bar area.
Brian Greenan opened the evening by welcoming Dennis Taylor who then did an introductory talk to the members after which there was a series of planned short frames with Dennis. The first frame was with David Hoare who had won the club open raffle to play Dennis. The next four frames were all sponsored and the named after the sponsor. Frame two was ‘The Kossways Match’ sponsored by Paul Wood which featured the Ancients Champion, Mick Lawler. Frame three was ‘The Chris Simmons Match’ featuring the top club player of the day, Bob Hill. Frame four was ‘The Presidents Cup’ sponsored by Peter Gregory and featuring the League Player of the year, James Holloway. The final frame was ‘The Youngs Brewery Match’ and featured the ‘A’ Team captain, Steve Peppiatt.
Everyone then enjoyed a splendid free buffet out in the main bar area before everyone resumed their seats for the grand finale, with Dennis Taylor presenting his ‘Unique Snooker Show’ with some amazing trick shots and comedy anecdotes throughout.
It is fair to say that it was an amazing way to round off the clubs Centenary Celebrations.
